Improve Your Mental Health During Tough Times

One of the things we can count on is that change is always happening. Dealing with changes in a healthy way is sometimes challenging and we often need to look for ways to improve our mental health so that we can navigate the roads of life easier.

One of the best ways I have found to deal with change is to look for the positive. Although, depending on the severity of the change, this can sometimes be very difficult.

When my dad died at a young age, it was hard to see anything good about losing him. However, I was immediately thankful that he was no longer in pain.

As the years go by, I see that his passing changed the course of my life and my sisters. Our passion to help people improve their wellbeing is fueled by our memory of him.

This last year I have had a lot of change in my life. I have moved across the state, my daughter left for college, I started a new job and I became divorced after 10 years of marriage.

Being aware of my mental health has been crucial during this time. I can’t say that I didn’t have my down days where all I did was cry and feel sorry for myself because I did. However, I was always able to pull myself out of my funk and I know that I am a better person because of it.

Other ways I have found to improve your mental health are:

  1. Belief in a higher power – Knowing that God has my back and will always be there for me has helped me get out of bed on more than one day. I have faith that I am blessed and that although these changes can be difficult and terrifying in the moment that God has something great planned for me. I believe that this there is a reason each one of us is here and that we are all destined for our own greatness.
  2. Take care of yourself – Make sure you get even more sleep during stressful times. Make time to exercise, eat right and meditate.
  3. Do things just to feel happy – Get regular manicures, pedicures and/or massages.  Go on a vacation or to the movies.
  4. Balance work and life – This is probably the hardest thing to do when the change is extremely stressful. You might need to reevaluate what this looks like so you can find this balance.
